When someone searches "dentist near me", "aircond service Petaling Jaya" or "best nasi lemak in Bangsar", Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any normal website results. That box is called the local pack, and for businesses that serve a local area it is often the most valuable spot on Google.
Local SEO is the work of getting your business into those results. This guide to local SEO in Malaysia covers the steps that matter most.
How Google ranks local businesses
Google explains that local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how far your business is from the searcher or the location in the search.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, based on things like reviews, links and mentions across the web.
You cannot change where a customer is standing, but you can improve relevance and prominence. That is what local SEO does.
Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the foundation of local SEO.
- Claim and verify your profile at business.google.com.
- Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your signboard. Adding keywords to your name breaks Google's guidelines.
- Choose the right primary category. This is one of the strongest relevance signals. Add secondary categories for your other main services.
- Add your services and products with short descriptions.
- Set accurate opening hours, including special hours for public holidays such as Hari Raya and Chinese New Year.
- Write a clear business description that explains what you do and the areas you serve.
- Upload real photos of your premises, team and work, and keep adding new ones.
Step 2: Keep your name, address and phone number consistent
Google cross-checks your business details across the web. Your name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should be identical everywhere: your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook page, and directory listings.
Small differences, such as "Jalan" vs "Jln", or an old phone number on one directory, create doubt. Pick one format and use it everywhere.
Step 3: Build local citations
A citation is any online listing of your business details. Useful places for Malaysian businesses include:
- Bing Places and Apple Business Connect (for Apple Maps users)
- Facebook and Instagram business pages
- Waze, for businesses customers drive to
- Malaysian business directories and industry associations
- Platforms specific to your industry, such as booking or review sites
Focus on quality and accuracy rather than hundreds of low-quality listings.
Step 4: Earn reviews consistently
Reviews are one of the strongest prominence signals, and they persuade customers to choose you. Ask every customer for an honest review, make it easy with a direct link or QR code, and reply to every review. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews explains how to do it within Google's rules.
Step 5: Optimise your website for local searches
Your website supports your Business Profile. Make sure it includes:
- Your city or area in key places: page titles, headings and text, for example "Accounting Firm in Petaling Jaya".
- Your full address and phone number, ideally in the footer of every page.
- An embedded Google Map on your contact page.
- Local business schema markup, code that helps Google read your business details.
- A mobile-friendly, fast design, because most local searches happen on phones.
Step 6: Create location pages if you serve several areas
If you have several branches, or you serve customers across different areas (for example Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam), create a separate page for each location with:
- The address and contact details for that branch, or a clear description of the area you serve.
- Content written for that area, not the same text with the city name swapped.
- Directions, local landmarks, photos and reviews from customers in that area.
Step 7: Get mentioned by local websites
Links and mentions from local websites build prominence. Ideas that work in Malaysia:
- Sponsoring or taking part in community events.
- Being featured by local news sites, blogs or business associations.
- Partnerships with complementary local businesses.
- Listing in your industry association's member directory.
Step 8: Post updates and track your results
Use Google Business Profile posts to share offers, events and news; they keep your profile active. Then track what matters: your rankings for your main local searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks from your profile (shown in the Business Profile performance report).
Common local SEO mistakes
- Adding keywords or locations to your business name.
- Using a virtual office address where you do not serve customers.
- Having two or more duplicate profiles for the same location.
- Ignoring reviews, or replying only to good ones.
- Changing your business name, address or phone number without updating your listings.
