Before customers in Malaysia call you, visit your shop or send a WhatsApp, many of them check your Google reviews. A business with plenty of recent, positive reviews looks trustworthy. A business with three reviews from 2021 looks like it might have closed.

Reviews also help you get found. Google uses them as one of the signals for local rankings, so more good reviews can help you appear higher in Google Maps and "near me" searches.

Here is how to get more Google reviews in a way that works and stays within Google's rules.

First, know what Google does not allow

Getting this wrong can get reviews removed or your Business Profile restricted, so start here. Under Google's review policies, you should not:

  • Buy reviews or pay anyone to write them.
  • Offer rewards for reviews, such as discounts, vouchers or free items.
  • Ask only happy customers. Selectively asking satisfied customers while avoiding unhappy ones (often called "review gating") is not allowed.
  • Write reviews yourself or ask staff, friends or family to review your business.
  • Post fake negative reviews on competitors.

Everything in this guide follows these rules.

1. Make leaving a review effortless

Most satisfied customers are happy to leave a review; they just will not go looking for how to do it. Remove every step you can:

  • Get your review link. In your Google Business Profile, use the "Ask for reviews" option to copy a short link that opens the review form directly.
  • Create a QR code from that link and place it at your counter, on receipts, invoices, menus or packaging.
  • Save the link as a quick reply in WhatsApp Business so your team can send it in seconds.

2. Ask every customer, at the right moment

Timing matters. Ask when the experience is fresh and positive for most customers:

  • Right after a successful service or delivery.
  • When a customer thanks you or compliments your team.
  • After a project milestone, for service businesses.

Ask all customers, not just the ones you expect to be happy. A short, friendly message works best:

"Thank you for choosing us! If you have a minute, we'd really appreciate your honest review on Google. It helps other customers find us: [link]"

3. Follow up once

Many customers mean to leave a review and forget. One polite reminder a few days later, by WhatsApp, SMS or email, can make a big difference. Do not chase more than once; it starts to feel pushy.

4. Make it part of your team's routine

Reviews grow fastest when asking becomes a habit, not a campaign. Add the review request to your checkout process, your project hand-over checklist or your post-service follow-up. Some businesses track how many review requests each outlet or team member sends each week.

5. Reply to every review

Replying shows potential customers that you care, and it encourages more people to leave reviews.

  • Positive reviews: thank the customer by name and mention something specific. Keep it short and genuine.
  • Negative reviews: stay calm and professional. Apologise for the experience, avoid arguing in public and offer to resolve it privately, for example "Please WhatsApp us at … so we can make this right."

Future customers read your replies as much as the reviews themselves. A thoughtful reply to a bad review can win more trust than a perfect five-star rating.

6. Handle fake or abusive reviews correctly

You cannot delete reviews yourself. If a review breaks Google's policies, for example spam, fake reviews, hate speech or a review from someone who was never a customer, you can report it from your Business Profile. Google decides whether to remove it.

For genuine negative reviews, the best response is a professional reply and a steady flow of new, honest reviews from other customers.

7. Keep your Google Business Profile complete

Reviews work best on a profile that looks active and complete. Make sure you have:

  • The correct business name, address, phone number and opening hours.
  • The right primary category and your services listed.
  • Recent photos of your premises, team and work.
  • Regular posts with updates and offers.

These details, together with your reviews, help you rank in local search. Our local SEO services in Malaysia cover your full Business Profile setup.

How many reviews do you need?

There is no magic number. What matters most is having more and fresher reviews than the competitors who appear next to you in Google Maps, with a good average rating and replies from you. Check the top three businesses for your main search in your area and aim to beat them steadily over time.
